The tree and its roots are grown in a limited space where they consume all the nutrients of the soil. This is why it is important to renew the soil and at the same time provide the tree with a bigger pot where the roots can fit.

There is no norm for transplanting as each species has its own time. However you can tell if the tree needs repotting by lifting the tree from the pot. If the soil and roots look curled up and tangled or if each time you water it, it looks like the soil has difficulties absorbing the water, then it is time for repotting and transplanting.

The best time to repot is at the end of winter before the tree starts to grow.

To transplant you need a bigger pot, new soil and basic gardening tools.

Lift the tree from the pot, untangle the roots and remove the soil with a rake or hose them off with water. Cut approximately a third part of the roots and then place the tree in the new pot. Then put the new soil filling up the spaces between the roots avoiding leaving air capsules in between.

Then water the soil until water comes out clean from the drain of the pot.

Once repotting and transplanting is done keep the bonsai protected from wind and sun for a few days until the roots start working again and new leaves and branches start to come out.
